Sew along the edge of the zipper tape about 1/8 to 1/4 inch in from the edge.

Fold the zipper so the front is up.  Let the fabric roll up next to the coils.  Stitch as close to the zipper coil as possible.

Hold in place with a few pins if needed

Step Three:  Securing the Zipper to the Lap Side of the Fly

Fold the remaining fly piece over the zipper.

Stitch in about 1/8 to 1/4 inch in from the edge of the zipper tape.

You may do this with the zipper side up or the fly size up, whichever is easiest for you.

Put your pins on the side that will be up when sewing.

Step Four: Top Stitching the Fly Lap

Hand baste the fly extension to the pants.  This is usally 1/4 inch in from the fly extension edge.  You may shape it as desired.

On the public side of the fabric, machine stitch over the basting.
